Laguna Beach was founded in 1887 and incorporated as a city in 1927, and it had 23,032 residents at the 2020 census. Plein-air painters arrived in the early 1900s and formed the Laguna Beach Art Association, and the town is still known for its art festivals. Its 7 miles of coastline include 27 beaches and coves, protected by state marine reserves, and it is the only Orange County city with a dedicated greenbelt in the hills behind it.
